Capping the career with a win

(Editor's note: UCLA wide receiver Danny Farmer will file a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. For more information on the Bruins, visit the official UCLA site.)

Nov. 18, 1999

The Washington game was a lot of fun for me because it was my last game in the Rose Bowl. I just wanted to go out on top, so beating the Huskies was a great feeling for me because it reminded me of all the great games I've had in the Rose Bowl throughout my career. The game also really showed the character of this team; everyone really hung in there and fought hard until the end and it was just a huge win for us.

Proving them all wrong

This week, as always, is big for us. USC has a great defense. They have a lot of great athletes on both sides of the ball and just a lot of guys that can make good plays. We are going to have to be physical this week and hopefully establish the running game and make some big plays on the offensive side of the ball. Like I said, they have a lot of great athletes, and in order to win this game, we have to limit their big plays.

Our defense is going to have to step up and our offense is going to have to put up some points. This game is kind of like a bowl game for both teams since neither team is going to a bowl game this season. For UCLA, it's going to be a bowl game in itself because it will be the last time this team plays together.

Perhaps the difference between this game and all the other ones we've prepared for is that there is a little more emotion. There is always a little more spirit during the USC week mostly due to the extra attention this game gets. There is more media attention this week as well. Hopefully we can go out with a win and have a lot to celebrate.

I think missing quarterback Cory Paus' experience this week is going to hurt us a little, but Ryan McCann is doing great. He has a lot of great skills as a quarterback. I think what's unique about UCLA is that we have four great quarterbacks here who can step in and do well.

Ryan is finally getting his chance to play. He can throw the ball and run really well and he's a pretty big guy who can take some hits. His weakness right now is just experience. He hasn't had a lot of chances to show what he can do, but judging from the Washington game, he's going to be a pretty good quarterback. I'm looking forward to playing my last game with him because he's always working really hard and giving his all out there on the field.

Next week, when the season is over, I'll be ready for a break. However, I don't want to go out with a loss. If we win, I'll take a couple days off and just relax. Football is so time-consuming that I kind of can't wait to just be a normal student and go to class in the afternoon and do all those things that normal students do. I might help out with the volleyball team in the spring.

My roommate is Fred Robbins. We came in together and he's now coaching now on the bench. Hopefully I'll be able to go and sit by him and help out a little bit this year. It's something that I'd really like to do because it's so much fun being a part of the UCLA volleyball team.
