Record is small consolation in loss

(Editor's note: UCLA wide receiver Danny Farmer will file a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. For more information on the Bruins, visit the official UCLA site.)

Oct. 7, 1999

Last week was a tough week. The Arizona State game is something that's kind of difficult and a sore subject to talk about. We had the lead with :58 seconds to go. We were up by six, but unfortunately our defense couldn't stop them on the last drive and we ended up coming out of there with a loss.

It's a difficult thing because we were on top, we made some mistakes, but I think we fought hard througout the game and played hard. It just wasn't good enough, we didn't execute enough and it was a difficult game and a difficult loss for this team.

Defense was the key

Looking ahead to Oregon, I think what's great about Oregon is that we've had some close games the last couple of years, so we know pretty much all about them and they know pretty much all about us. It's turned into a great little rivalry and I'm looking forward to the game.

In terms of defense, they have some great athletes, guys that I've played against for a while. Michael Fletcher, Brandon Maclemore and Justin Wilcox -- I've played against for three or four years now. We've been going against each other and it's a great little relationship we have because we have a respect for each other. I think it's going to be fun to go out there and play my last UCLA vs. Oregon game on Saturday.

After the Arizona State game, I think I'm getting a lot closer to being back to 100 percent. I think the early season injuries are really out the way now. I'm just really excited because my ankle is getting better. It was frustrating there for a while, but it's a lot better now and I think I'll be 100 percent real soon.

Setting the UCLA all-time receiving yards record really didn't mean a lot to me, especially since we lost. I think it would've meant a little more had we won. But again, we lost so I really didn't think about it. In fact, I had to be reminded of it after the game because I was so disappointed that we lost. It might mean something 10 to 15 years from now, but right now I'm just trying to go out and win some football games.

Records don't really mean much, maybe later on they will. But I think you just have to concentrate on going out and winning because if you focus on records you're not playing a team sport and football is definitely a team sport and it's a great example of it.
