New coach changes offense, perceptions

Utah State Aggies
1999 record: 4-7 (3-3 Big West) Coach: Mick Dennehy
Returning starters: 9 (5 offense, 4 defense)

Outlook
The strength of the Aggie team the past two years has been its defense and that could be the case again this year. The offense lost the school's all-time leading rusher, Demario Brown, and it may take awhile for the new staff to implement its high-powered passing offense. Jeff Crosbie returns at quarterback and his receiving corps should be improved with a couple of freshman and players converted from other positions. Emmett White was an outstanding kick returner last year and he'll be counted on for returning duties again this year as well as being the main ball carrier along with John Roberts.

Defensively, the Aggies will be strong in the middle with all three starters returning in Brent Passey, Blake Eagal and Tony Newson. The defensive front will be all new, while the backfield returns cornerback Tony Walker, who Dennehy says could be "as good as anybody in the conference."

The special teams should be strong with Steve Mullins, a freshman all-American, returning as punter along with Brad Bohn, already the school's all time leading field goal kicker.

Keep an eye on ...
Junior quarterback Jeff Crosbie. He's been a starter for the past 15 games and has shown he all the tools necessary for a quarterback with a strong arm, size (6-foot-5, 200) and quick feet. He'll be the key figure in Dennehy's "pass first, run second" offense. After spring practice, Dennehy opened up the QB position with sophomore Jose Fuentes vying for the job. But it was more likely done as a motivational tool for Crosbie, who should emerge as the No. 1 guy again this year.

It's a good season if ...
The Aggies can top last year's 4-7 mark. The Aggies were picked for last place in the league by the Big West coaches, so there are few expectations of them vying for a conference title. They should win games against Division I-AA Southern Utah and Idaho State and grab a couple of league wins. That means if they can beat one of the rest of their foes -- Utah, BYU, Texas Tech or Arizona State, Aggie fans should be doing cartwheels.
