Hendricks, Broncos could breeze through Big West

Boise State Broncos
1999 record: 10-3 (5-1 Big West)
Coach: Dirk Koetter
Returning starters: 12 (7 offense, 5 defense)

Outlook
The Broncos are excited about this year's prospects with several key performers back from last year. Leading the way is quarterback Bart Hendricks, who can run and pass well and was responsible for 30 touchdowns last year. His leading receiver from 1999, Jeb Putzier, is back after catching 39 passes for 514 yards. The running game features the solid, if unspectacular duo of Davy Malaythong and Shay Swan.

The defense is led by linebacker Kareem Williams and cornerback Dempsy Dees, who were both all-Big West first-team selections last year. Other starters back on the defense are defensive tackle Bradly Phillips and safeties Quintin Mikell, Shaunard Harts. Nick Calaycay came to Boise as a walk-on, but ended up earning all-first league honors by making 14 of 17 field goals.

Keep an eye on ...
Senior quarterback Bart Hendricks. After rotating with another QB his first two seasons, Hendricks came into his own last year when he passed for 2,746 yards and 22 touchdowns and ran for 357 yards and eight touchdowns. He won Big West offensive player of the year honors in 1999 and will be the favorite for offensive honors again this year. The BSU sports information office is even pushing Hendricks for all-America honors, which would be a first since BSU became a Division I school.

It's a good season if ...
The Broncos win another league title and return to the hometown Humanitarian Bowl. About the only thing the Broncos can do better than that is go unbeaten. That will be tough with the likes of Arkansas, New Mexico and Washington State -- all on the road -- on their schedule. Other non-league games are against Northern Iowa, Central Michigan and Eastern Washington. If the Broncos could win their five Big West games and five of their six non-league games, they'd be 10-1 going into the Humanitarian Bowl. Because of last year's success, anything less might be considered a poor season by the Boise faithful.
