Aggies look for first conference title since 1978

New Mexico State Aggies
1999 record: 6-5 (3-3 Big West)
Coach: Tony Samuel
Returning starters: 12 (6 offense, 6 defense)

Outlook
The Aggies run the I formation, which Samuel found success with as a player and coach at Nebraska. Unfortunately he'll never have the talent found at Nebraska, but the Aggies have posted two of the top three total offense figures in school history over the past two years. Left-handed K.C. Enzminger, who threw for 14 touchdowns and ran for eight more, is back at quarterback. The top six rushers from last year also return led by Kenton Keith and Chris Barnes. The biggest question marks come at the receiver position and on the line where two starting jobs need to be filled.

The defense must replace virtually the entire line, but does have experience at linebacker and in the secondary. D'Wayne Taylor started every game at linebacker and was second on the team with 97 tackles while Donald Malloy and Jascon Willis, two first-team Big West selections, are returning starters in the secondary. Andy Kohl, one of the premier punters in the league last year, will handle placekicking and punting duties.

Keep an eye on ...
K.C. Enzminger. The quarterback has shared playing duties the past two years in Samuel's two-quarterback system, but may be counted on for the bulk of the playing time this year. He's the guy who will need to make the Aggie offense go and his ability to both run and pass will keep defenses off-balance.

It's a good season if ...
The Aggies can win the Big West. After finishing with a rare winning record last year, the Aggies may be expected to bring home a championship to Las Cruces, something that hasn't happened since 1978 when the Aggies won the Missouri Valley Conference. They have the advantage of playing league favorite Boise State at home this year so if they can get by the Broncos on Oct. 28, they have a great chance to go all the way.
