Indians improving, but record might not show it

Arkansas State Indians
1999 record: 4-7 (3-3 Big West)
Coach: Joe Hollis
Returning starters: 13 (7 offense, 6 defense)

Outlook
Offensive production has been a problem, the past couple of years, but with a three-year starter at quarterback, one of the top running backs in the Big West and a record-setting receiver, the offense should be a strength this year. Hollis has promised to open things up more this year with a one-back, four-receiver set that will keep opponents from stacking the line against the run like they did last year. Cleo Lemon has passed for 35 touchdowns in three years as a starter and the new offense should benefit his skills. Robert Kilow was a first-team all-league receiver after catching 57 passes, the most in ASU history. Jonathan Adams is projected as a first-team running back after rushing for 680 yards and six touchdowns.

Sean Mitchell was the leading tackler for the Indians in 1999 from his safety position and will lead the defense along with defensive end Erik Kellim and cornerback Hanis Bowens. The kicking game is solid with Andy Shatley returning as punter and Nick Gatto as the placekicker.

Keep an eye on ...
Quarterback Cleo Lemon. The senior signal-caller may not be the best quarterback around, but he is one of the most exciting. He's been the starter in Jonesboro for his entire career and is already the all-time leading passer with 5,742 yards. He's known for his strong arm and ability to read defenses and could blossom this year with a new emphasis on the passing game

It's a good season if ...
The Indians can stay in the conference race for most of the season. They've always been picked for the bottom half of the league standings and have ended up there, but last year, they moved up to 3-3 in a tie for third place. A winning record looks out of the question with non-league games against the likes of Oklahoma, North Carolina State, Mississippi, TCU and Memphis.
