Did you know?
New coaches take over at three MEAC schools this year: Wil Jones at Norfolk State, Tony Sheals at Delaware State and Curtis Hunter at North Carolina A&T. Each have interesting and different backgrounds. Jones had been the head coach at District of Columbia, a Division II power where he won a D-II national title in 1983. Sheals should know the MEAC -- he was the head coach at Bethune-Cookman from 1993-1997 before moving to Towson State as an assistant for the last two years. Hunter will serve as the interim coach of the Aggies this season as he replaces Roy Thomas, who resigned after last season. Hunter is a former McDonald's All-American who played for Dean Smith at North Carolina from 1982-1987. Jones is Norfolk State's third head coach in three years, while Sheals is the fourth head coach in five years at Deleware State.
Former Deleware State coach James DuBose is now an assistant at Coppin State.
Florida A&M recovered from an 0-10 start and won four games in four days to claim the MEAC Tournament championship last year.
Coppin State shared the regular-season title with South Carolina State and it marked the seventh straight year the Eagles have won at least a share of the title.
South Carolina State continued its dominant play in the regular season as well. The Bulldogs have not finished lower than seventh in the last seven seasons.
Stephanie Ready, a 1998 graduate of Coppin State, became just the second woman to be hired as an assistant coach for a men's program when she went to work during the summer for her alma mater. Ready, who will also serve as the school's volleyball coach, follows Bernadette Locke, who worked on Rick Pitino's staff at Kentucky.
Maryland-Eastern Shore picked up two big non-conference wins last year with victories over Niagara and James Madison.
Hampton has four transfers from Division I schools who will be eligible after the first semester.
Former Georgetown starter Ed Sheffey will play at Norfolk State this year. Sheffey played for the Hoyas with Allen Iverson and helped lead Georgetown to the 1996 NCAA Tournament East Regional championship game before being injured in a car accident and missing the last three years.
Bethune Cookman was one of the most-improved teams in the country last season going from 1-26 to 11-16.
Maryland-Eastern Shore was the up-and-down team of the MEAC last year with a win at South Carolina State and then a loss at last-place Howard.
Morgan State will finally play a full season in its own Hill Field House. The Bears spent two-and-a-half seasons playing off campus while waiting for Hill to be finished.
MEAC Player of the Year Damion Woolfolk averaged 23.2 points per game last year and that was 13th in the nation.
Deleware State senior forward Barrington Clarke shou ld know a lot about coaching after the year is over with -- he will play for his fourth coach in five years.
Hampton center Tarvis Williams led the nation in blocked shots with a 5.0 per game average.
