Penn and Princeton are bringing in freshman classes well beyond the normal "level" of the league. Princeton got an early Christmas present in August when 6-6 forward Spencer Gloger from Santa Margarita High School in Mission Viejo, Calif., decided he wanted to play for the Tigers. Gloger had a tough time making up his mind. He first committed to Princeton, but then switched to UCLA, where he signed a grant-in-aid last May, after the late signing period had ended. The difference between that and a letter of intent is that the former isn't binding. Thus, he was able to change his mind again and leave for Princeton, where he's eligible immediately. "Spencer wanted to go to a program where he could make a major immediate impact as a freshman," UCLA coach Steve Lavin said. "With four starters back, along with seven other experienced lettermen, it would have been difficult for him to do that at UCLA this year. I think Spencer is a talented player who would have contributed to our program this year and whose contributions would have increased throughout his UCLA career. But I understand his reasoning for going to Princeton." Gloger averaged 23.7 points and 6.0 rebounds in his senior season at Margarita.
For the record, the unofficial Ivy League championship games will be played on Feb. 15 at Princeton and March 7 at Penn, when the Tigers and Quakers meet. These games usually decide the league championship as the teams have dominated the league, winning or sharing the league title every year of the 1990s. The teams have won or shared the title 42 times since the league formally began in 1957. Only Brown (1986) and Cornell (1988) have won the league since 1968.
