Did you know?
Elon and High Point will not become eligible for NCAA postseason play until the 2001-02 season. Neither school will participate in the Big South tournament this season, but their games will count in the regular-season conference standings.
The regular-season champion and runner-up will get automatic byes into the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Only two Big South teams (Winthrop and Radford) finished last season with a winning record.
Charleston Southern has three players on its team from Serbia -- Mladen Karanovic, Nikola Pejovic and Mirko Mandic.
Coastal Carolina is developing its own television package for this season. All of the Chanticleers' games will be televised, either live or tape-delayed, on a local independent channel in the South Carolina coastal region.
Elon head coach Mark Simons is married to Gail Goestenkors, the head women's coach at Duke.
High Point head coach Jerry Steele was the head coach of the old ABA's Carolina Cougars during the second half of the 1970-71 season.
It will be teacher vs. pupil on Nov. 17 when High Point plays at Wake Forest. Steele coached Wake Forest head coach Dave Odom at Guilford College.
Marcus Stewart, who was dismissed last season from the Coastal Carolina team, has transferred to Winthrop.
