| | | It went right down to the wire as "Going, Going Gonzalez" barely edged "Luis-ville Slugger" in Page 2's Berman Files poll to find a suitable -- and non-Gonzo -- nickname for Arizona outfielder Luis Gonzalez.
| | In tribute to Luis Gonzalez's home run power, Page 2 readers prefer to call him "Going, Going Gonzalez." |
The winning moniker earned 558 (17.7 percent) of the 3,147 votes cast as it edged second place "Luis-ville Slugger" (17.1 percent) by just 20 votes.
Rounding out the top five nicknames for the Diamondbacks slugger were "Long Gone-zalez" (465 votes, 14.7 percent), "Louie Long Ball" (388 votes, 12.3 percent) and "Hasta Lui-Go" (383 votes, 12.1 percent).
Chris Berman has been calling him Luis "Speedy" Gonzalez. The nickname expert said he liked that moniker because it was easy and it stuck, not because it served as a good description of the player. But among readers' suggestions, Berman liked "Luis Gorgonzalez," particularly Cecil Hayduke's explanation about Gonzalez "handling the high cheese."
Page 2 editors agreed with readers as we were torn between "Going, Going Gonzalez" and "Luis-ville Slugger," although Hasta Lui-Go was close behind.
Thanks for voting, and check back next week for another edition of The Berman Files to affix a good nickname on athletes in desperate need of monikers.
