Case No. 10, Luis Gonzalez From the Page 2 mailbag |
After we opened another case for The Berman Files, Page 2 readers flooded us with more than 700 letters suggesting nicknames for Diamondbacks slugger Luis Gonzalez.
Luis "Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Ball" Gonzalez Well, the temptation is to play off this recent homerun streak with something like Luis "Going, Going" Gonzalez (or, in a more abstract vein, play off an ESPN announcer's home run call with something like "LOO-YAH!" or Luis "Aloha Means" Gonzalez. In any case, with a name like Gonzalez, you really have to work with the first half of the name. ... My call: I think most NL pitchers this year would agree that the most fearsome slugger in baseball right now is Luis "Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Ball" Gonzalez. Joe Miguez Athens, Ga. "Gonzo the Great" There are many Gonzalezes called "Gonzo," but he is the best of all of them in baseball right now. David Saunders Morristown, Tenn. "The Gonz" He's as cool as the Fonz. Chris Oliverio San Jose, Calif. Luis "Gonz with the Wind" He hits the ball hard. Scott Carbary Houston "Louie Long Ball" Great home-run stroke, sweet fundamentals, MVP candidate, and family man, old school nickname for this true ball player. Joe "The Crow" Menendez Sacramento, Calif. Luis "Bombzalez" You know why -- 'cause this year he's hitting bombz. Jon Claffey Flagstaff, Ariz. "Luis Arm-Strongin' it" Gonzalez Clarke Warren Oak Park, IL Luis "Navidad" Gonzalez. Because it was like Christmas when the Diamondbacks acquired him from Detroit for Karim Garcia. Gary A. Carter Portland, Ore. Because he sends souvenir gifts to bleacher bums just about every game. Sean McCall St. Cloud, Minn. "Geez Luis" It's a simple, two-word response that throughout the season has been uttered by every one of his critics expressing their shock and amazement concerning his monster year. DJ Harman Carrollton, Texas "Luis-ville Slugger" This guy swings the wooden stick like it's his job...wait a second, it is! Mark Graham Hamburg, N.Y. "L-Train" Luis Gonzalez is on a mission, be it leading his team to the World Series or raising his statistics...he can't be stopped. Jeff Ignacio Canton, Ohio Luis "Gorgonzalez" He can handle the high cheese. Cecil Hayduke Seattle "Diamond(back) in the Rough" Until the D-backs "found" him in '99, he had been realtively obscure. But, ever since, he has been a gem of a player. Nicholas Bianco Punxsutawney, Penn. "Louiee, Luaaii, Oh no!" Gonzalez Because no opposing pitcher wants to see him. John Harris Clarksville, Tenn. "FabuLuis" Gonzalez Cuz he is always fab. Cullen Shelton Sterling, Va. "Hasta Lui-Go" See you later! Like "hasta luego", only Lui(Luis)-Go(Gonzalez). He's been known to say goodbye to baseballs.
