We did fairly well this past weekend, getting two wins over Washington State and Washington. They were two must-wins for us to get into the NCAA Tournament. Even though we ended up beating Washington State by 10, we let them score 86 points on us, which was not what we really wanted. We had a couple of people who had really good games. (Freshman) Nicole Kaczmarski set a record, going 7-for-8 from 3-point range. She shot very well this weekend. Against Washington, the Huskies stuck with us in the first half, but we came out in the second and played really well. I was able to capture the Pac-10 scoring title in that game, which was very neat for me. We came in for a timeout and coach Kathy (Olivier) told me that I needed six more points. The players were really good about getting me the ball and were happy to see me get the record. It was just a good experience all around. I'm not really used to scoring just for myself. I'm more into scoring for the team and doing what the team needs. It was kind of hard for me to have us up by so much and me worrying about scoring. But it was really nice to have the team behind me and that helped me a lot. Overall, I think that these two wins were really what we needed heading into the tournament because it gave us some added confidence going into March Madness.
Now it's tournament time. Everyone keeps talking about our seed and I think a No. 10 seed -- although it's low for people that have been around our program and know what kind of team we have -- is probably kind of accurate seeing how we haven't had the best year. We've been very inconsistent and I think that's why we got a No. 10 seed. But as everyone knows, anything can happen in the tournament. I'm just really happy to be here, and I think we got a pretty good draw. We've played at Notre Dame before and that will help. We know a lot about both schools. George Washington has a lot of foreign kids and that means the Colonials will have a lot of players that can hit the 3. Their post players will be taller, but mobile. I think they have three people that are averaging double figures for them so they aren't a one-dimensional team by any means. They are ranked in the top 20, I think (No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll). They are a team that we can beat, but we are going to have to play well. I think this tournament is going to be a chance for us to redeem ourselves for the season. I think this season has been a little disappointing, but if we do well in the tournament, that will make up for the disappointments we've had earlier in the year. We've had a lot of injuries. We were lacking chemistry a little bit. But ending on a high note will make up for all of that. |
