The lowdown
2000-01 record: 31-3; 16-2 in Pac-10 (1st)
Final Ranking: No. 5 ESPN/USA Today; No. 2 AP
Postseason: Lost to Maryland 87-73 in West Regional final of NCAA Tournament.
Three Questions for 2001-02
1. Will Curtis Borchardt be healthy enough to make a major contribution? Can he be counted on for 28 minutes a game? If so, will he also score instead of being solely a defensive presence?
2. Can Justin Davis and Teyo Johnson have major roles inside? Will Davis' athleticism and Johnson's brute strength make it tough to score on the Cardinal?
3. Can Julius Barnes handle being a role player or is he the starting point? If he's not the starter, then is it Tony Giovacchini or newcomer Chris Hernandez?
Andy Katz's Scenarios
Best case: Casey Jacobsen has an MVP season, Borchardt is healthy and the Cardinal still win the Pac-10 and get a top five seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Worst case: The Cardinal don't have a reliable point, can't score in the post or defend and finish fourth or fifth in the league, but still make the NCAAs.
