Mashburn's 26 powers Miami

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

MIAMI (AP) -- Jamal Mashburn scored 26 points and Miami benefited from Tim Duncan's poor free-throw shooting to beat San Antonio 88-84 Sunday, the Heat's 16th win in their last 17 home games.

The Spurs had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Tied at 83, P.J. Brown blocked Duncan's shot in the lane, and on the other end, Mashburn hit a 3-pointer, his second of the game.

Trailing 86-84 with 1:16 to play, Duncan missed the second of two free throws. Tim Hardaway then hit a scoop shot under Duncan to give Miami an 88-84 lead.

Duncan could have pulled the Spurs to within two points, but missed two more from the line.

David Robinson led the Spurs with 28.

Mourning picked up his fifth foul with 8:26 to play. With Mourning on the bench, the Spurs dominated the lane and took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Jaren Jackson with 3:42 left.

The Heat led 53-44 at the half behind 13 points from Mashburn and 10 from Mourning.

San Antonio trimmed Miami's nine-point, first-quarter lead to 30-28 with three consecutive baskets in the opening minutes of the second quarter. But the Heat used a 14-4 run to take their largest lead of the first half at 44-32 with a little more than five minutes to play in the half.

In the spurt, Bruce Bowen hit a pair of 3-pointers. His first caused coach Gregg Popovich to call a timeout. His second came on Miami's next possession, about 45 seconds later. It infuriated Popovich and forced him to take another timeout.

The Spurs got within two points several times in the third quarter. Robinson scored 15 in the third, hitting all nine of his free throws and adding a dunk and two short jumpers.

Game notes
Heat coach Pat Riley denied a report in The New York Times that a Lakers representative approached him three times last year about returning to Los Angeles. "I heard those rumors myself," Riley said. "They probably emanated out of New York." ... Dan Majerle's 3-pointer in the first quarter extended the Heat's consecutive game streak with a 3-pointer to 497 games, an NBA record. ... Miami now has beaten the defending NBA champs for the fifth straight season. The Spurs, playing without Duncan, beat the Heat 93-69 on Feb. 29 in San Antonio. The last time Miami didn't record at least one win against the champions was during the 1994-95 season when it went 0-2 against the Houston Rockets. ... San Antonio guard Terry Porter, who played for Miami last season, dressed for the game but did not play. He has been out since early March with a sprained left medial collateral ligament.
