PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Kevin Young returned from a suspension and hit a two-run homer as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in the next-to-last baseball game at Three Rivers Stadium on Saturday night.

Young had been suspended two games by the commissioner's office for making contact with an umpire during an argument in a game at Milwaukee on Sept. 21.

The Pirates were leading 2-0 in the fourth when Young's 20th homer followed John Vander Wal's single off starter Ruben Quevedo (3-10).

Adrian Brown opened the Pirates' first with a single and scored on Jason Kendall's double. Vander Wal added a sacrifice fly.

Todd Ritchie (9-8) gave up two runs on nine hits over seven innings. Roosevelt Brown led off the sixth with his third home run. Corey Patterson followed with a single and scored on Mike Mahoney's double.

The Pirates have won three consecutive games and are 9-2 against the Cubs this year.

Mike Williams pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

The Cubs have lost 23 of their last 29 games.

Notes: Manager Don Baylor kept catcher Joe Girardi out of the lineup. Girardi has a ligament strain in his knee. ... Mahoney's second-inning single was his first major league hit in five at-bats. He was 2-for-2. ... Brian Giles is the first player in Pirates history to hit at least .300 with 30 home runs and 100 RBIs in consecutive seasons. ... The Pirates, who were averaging just over 21,000 per home date have drawn 40,128 and 43,458 in the last two nights. Sunday's Three Rivers farewell sold out within minutes after tickets were made available.
