ST. PETERSBURG (AP) _ Morgan Burkhart hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning as the Boston Red Sox beat Tampa Bay 4-2 Saturday, ending the Devil Rays' six-game winning streak.

Burkhart's third homer of the season came off Roberto Hernandez (4-7) and put the Red Sox up 3-2. Rico Brogna added a run-scoring double to complete the three-run rally.

Tampa Bay, which was looking for a franchise-record seventh win in a row, took a 2-1 lead in the eighth when Felix Martinez scored on a throwing error by first baseman Brogna.

One day after they were officially eliminated from postseason play, the Red Sox kept a number of regulars, including shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, out of the lineup.

Fred McGriff gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead with his 417th career home run, and 27th this season, in the seventh. He has 105 RBIs, one more than the team record he set last season.

Boston tied it at 1 on Trot Nixon's run-scoring double in the eighth.

Rheal Cormier (3-3) pitched the eighth for the win. Derek Lowe got the final three outs for his 42nd save.

Tampa Bay starter Paul Wilson retired the final 13 batters he faced. He blanked Boston on four hits for seven innings.

Notes: Boston's Mike Lansing was ejected by home plate umpire Matt Hollowell for arguing a third strike call in the eighth. ... Boston manager Jimy Williams said he has not decided if Garciaparra will play in Sunday's season finale. ... Tampa Bay DH Greg Vaughn, who left the team Sept. 23 because of a family illness, returned to the lineup.
