SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- The San Jose Earthquakes extended their league-record 14-game home unbeaten streak to 14 games, forging a 1-1 tie against the Chicago Fire on Ian Russell's first career goal in extra time.

San Jose (4-7-6, 18 points) is winless on the road (0-7-2).

San Jose's pressure finally produced results after seeing scores of chances turned away by Chicago goalkeeper Zach Thornton. In the 92nd minute, Richard Mulrooney's corner kick landed at the feet of Russell. Surrounded by white jerseys, Russell fired a desperation shot that found the back of the net.

Both overtime periods were marked by end-to-end aggressive play. The squads played to win, with near misses and excellent chances keeping the vocal crowd in the game. However, neither side could capitalize.

Dema Kovalenko netted his sixth goal of the season in the 31st minute to give the Fire a 1-0 lead. San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon tried to punch a corner attempt clear of the penalty area but Fire forward Ante Razov kept the ball in the danger area by kicking it over his head toward the goal.

As the teams surged forward, Kovalenko found himself unmarked with the ball just a few feet in front of goal. The former Project-40 striker turned and fired, easily putting it home.

Defenders Carlos Bocanegra and C.J. Brown played superbly for Chicago's defense. The duo spent much of the game smothering the scoring opportunities of Krakowiak and Harut Karapetyan, the main outlets for the Earthquakes' direct, counterattack approach.

Chicago (9-7-3, 30 points) faces Colorado on July 4 and will be without Kovalenko, who will sit out due to yellow card points accumulation.
