Quarterbacks taking their lumps

Cade McNown
Cade McNown had a rough day against the Buccaneers defense.
There are a number of theories on how to handle rookie quarterbacks. One school of thought says to let them learn from the sidelines and not throw them into the fire too soon. Another says the best place to learn is on the field.

While two first-round picks, Donovan McNabb and Daunte Culpepper, remain on the sidelines, Tim Couch, Akili Smith and Cade McNown have spent the last few weeks taking their lumps.

In 11 games as starters, the three rookie quarterbacks are a combined 1-10 -- and that victory came in a matchup between Couch and Smith, so somebody had to win.

Here's a look at how some of the league's most intriguing rookies fared in Week 7. Each Tuesday during the regular season, ESPN.com will continue to offer its report cards for the Class of '99.

PLAYER, STATS THE SKINNY
Akili Smith, QB, Bengals

at Colts
12-for-24
122 yds., 0 TD, 0 INT
4 att., 42 yds.

The third overall pick had a difficult day in the Bengals' loss to the Colts. In his third career start, Smith completed half his passes, but he was sacked five times. The quarterback was knocked out of the game in the third quarter with a bruised right shin. He is probable for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
Tim Couch, QB,
Browns

at Rams
22-for-40
185 yds., 0 TD, 2 INTs
2 att., 50 yds.

Couch showed off his legs a little more than his arm in Sunday's loss to the Rams. Not known for his running ability, Couch had a 40-yard run -- the longest run by a quarterback in franchise history. In seven games this year, Couch has carried the ball 19 times for 198 yards (an average of 10.4 yards per carry). One positive for Couch was that he was only sacked once in the loss. He had been sacked 23 times in his five previous games.
Cade McNown, QB, Bears

at Buccaneers
9-for-23
82 yds., 0 TD, 1 INT
3 att., 10 yds.

In his second straight start, the lefty from UCLA had a rocky day. He completed only nine of 23 passes and was replaced in the third quarter by Jim Miller. "Obviously it's a stumbling block, but I'm going to be back and I'll be fine," McNown said. Bears coach Dick Jauron said a decision on next week's starter won't be made until Wednesday.
Andy Katzenmoyer, LB,
Patriots

vs. Broncos
9 tackles

Katzenmoyer continues to pile up tackles. The linebacker from Ohio State had nine stops in the Patriots' victory over the Broncos and is second on the team with 51 tackles in seven games.
Martin Gramatica, K,
Buccaneers

vs. Bears
2 field goals

Gramatica continues to show he was worth a third-round draft pick. The kicker from Kansas State accounted for the Buccaneers' only six points in their 6-3 victory over the Bears. He has made 11 of 13 field goals this season and has been successful on three of four attempts from beyond 40 yards.
Kevin Faulk, RB,
Patriots

vs. Broncos
5 att., 24 yds., 1 TD
210 return yards

The second-round pick from LSU had his most productive game in the NFL. Faulk, who had been hampered early this season by an ankle injury, scored his first NFL touchdown on a 15-yard run in the first quarter of the Patriots' win over the Broncos. Despite the rushing touchdown, Faulk's biggest contribution was on special teams. He had a total of 210 return yards, helping give the Pats good field position all game.
Ricky Williams, RB, Saints

at Giants
24 att., 111 yds.

Williams had one of the best games of his young career, and it came in the Saints' worst loss of the season. Despite Williams' first 100-yard game of the season (111 yards on 24 carries), the Saints were demolished 31-3 by the Giants. In six games in the NFL, Williams has yet to find the end zone. He had a touchdown run wiped out by a penalty.
Joe Montgomery, RB, Giants

vs. Saints
14 att., 28 yds.
1 TD

The rookie from Ohio State, seeing his first action of the season, carried the ball 14 times for 28 yards and his first NFL touchdown. However, Montgomery, who has been hampered by injuries all season, suffered a broken metatarsal in his left foot and will miss four to six weeks.
Edgerrin James, RB, Colts

vs. Bengals
26 att., 52 yds., 2 TDs
1 rec., 33 yds.

James didn't put up huge numbers on the ground this weekend, but he found the end zone twice in the Colts' victory over the Bengals. It was the first time James had scored a TD since the second week of the season. He has four TD runs in six games.
Cecil Collins, RB, Dolphins

vs. Eagles
26 att., 97 yds.
1 rec., 6 yds.

Collins helped the Dolphins run a conservative ball-control attack in their victory over the Eagles. The fifth-round pick rushed for 97 yards, and Miami controlled the clock for 36 minutes. The strong running game allowed Miami to throw a season-low 21 passes.
Olandis Gary, RB, Broncos

at Patriots
19 att., 90 yds.
4 rec., 39 yds.

Gary continues to fill in admirably for Terrell Davis. In Sunday's loss to the Patriots, Gary rushed for 90 yards, including a 60-yard run that set up a Denver touchdown. For the season, Gary has carried the ball 76 times for 278 yards (3.7 yards per carry).
