Looking like a real Champ

Champ Bailey
Champ Bailey has quickly jumped to the head of the rookie class.
Champ Bailey was the player the Redskins wanted all along. Sitting with the No. 5 pick in the NFL draft, Washington felt plenty of pressure to take running back Ricky Williams. However, after two trades, the 'Skins ended up at No. 7, where they landed Bailey, the versatile cornerback they really coveted.

On Sunday, Bailey had three interceptions and a touchdown, showing why many in Washington were smiling after the draft.

With the regular season six weeks old, here's a look at how some of the league's most intriguing rookies fared in Week 6.

Each Tuesday during the regular season, ESPN.com will continue to offer its report cards for the Class of '99.

PLAYER, STATS THE SKINNY
Champ Bailey, CB, Redskins

at Cardinals
6 tackles
3 interceptions
1 TD

The rookie from Georgia had his best game as a pro, helping the Redskins turn in a dominant defensive performance. Bailey intercepted three passes and returned one of them 59 yards for the game's first touchdown. In doing so, the 21-year-old became the youngest NFL player to return an interception for a touchdown and the youngest to record three interceptions in one game. Bailey has four picks on the year.
Tim Couch, QB,
Browns

at Jaguars
18-for-23
161 yds., 1 TD, 0 INT
2 att., 36 yds.

The No. 1 overall pick continues to play well, but not well enough to get the Browns a victory. Couch completed his first 12 passes and helped Cleveland build a 7-6 halftime lead. But for the third straight week, the Browns struggled offensively in the second half. "It's hard to say why we keep having these letdowns," Couch said. "We're playing hard both halves."
Akili Smith, QB, Bengals

vs. Steelers
19-for-38
207 yds., 0 TD, 2 INTs
3 att., 7 yds.

Smith's second NFL start wasn't as successful as his first. The Steelers' defense was all over the kid from Oregon, intercepting two passes, sacking him four times and batting down four of his passes at the line. "I played poorly. There's nothing else to say," Smith said. "I was in a position to make plays and I didn't make them. I didn't execute the offense. I didn't see the field well."
Andy Katzenmoyer, LB,
Patriots

vs. Dolphins
10 tackles, 2 sacks
1 interception
1 TD

The "Big Kat" had one of his best games as a pro in the Patriots' 31-30 loss. The rookie linebacker recorded his first interception, which he returned 57 yards for a touchdown. He also had 10 tackles and two sacks and was voted the Patriots' player of the game.
Ricky Williams, RB, Saints

vs. Titans
17 att., 35 yds.

Williams, who scored an NCAA Division I record 75 touchdowns while at the University of Texas, continues to struggle to find his way into the end zone. Through five games this season, Williams has no touchdowns. On Sunday, he was stopped for no gain on first-and-goal as time ran out in the first half. Williams has carried the ball 89 times for 292 yards this season, an average of 3.3 yards per carry.
Cade McNown, QB, Bears

vs. Eagles
17-for-33
255 yds., 1 TD, 2 INTs
4 att., 23 yds.

In McNown's first start for the Bears, he looked exactly like what he is -- a rookie. The first-time starter struggled early, throwing two first half-interceptions, and couldn't lead Chicago to a victory. "I wasn't nervous," McNown said. "I just didn't get a feel for the game until a couple of series." McNown turned things around in the second half, throwing an 80-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Robinson.
Edgerrin James, RB, Colts

at Jets
26 att., 111 yards
4 rec., 20 yds.

James continues to put up impressive numbers. He gained 111 yards, including 25 tough yards on the Colts' game-winning, 10-play drive. Of the 10 plays, six of them were runs by James. "He ran better as the game went on," coach Jim Mora told The Indianapolis Star. "When it was important to make first downs and keep the clock running, he made some really good runs." Through five games, James has 468 yards rushing, third most in the AFC.
Cecil Collins, RB, Dolphins

at Patriots
20 att., 59 yds.
1 rec., 5 yds.

Collins continues to get the bulk of the carries in Miami. In two games as the Dolphins' primary back, Collins has carried the ball 41 times for 145 yards (3.5 yards per carry) and one touchdown. On the season, he has 227 yards on 72 carries.
Olandis Gary, RB, Broncos

vs. Packers
37 att., 124 yds.
2 rec., 26 yds.

Gary, starting because of injuries to Terrell Davis and Derek Loville, carried 37 times for 124 yards and his first career touchdown as the Broncos beat Green Bay. The fourth-round pick from Georgia did his best Davis impersonation, filling in admirably for his fellow Bulldog.
