RECORD-SETTERS
The Greatest Dayne Ron Dayne rushed for 216 yards in breaking Ricky Williams' year-old career rushing record of 6,279. Dayne, who finished his career with 6,397, recorded the 11th 200-yard game of his career to tie the record shared by Marcus Allen of USC and Williams.
Apple of Texas' eye Major Applewhite became Texas' first 3,000-yard passer and the Longhorns earned a berth in the Big 12 title game with a 58-7 rout of Texas Tech. Applewhite was 22-of-34 for 241 yards against Tech, giving him 3,132 yards this season. His three touchdown passes gave him a school-record 21.
Another TD for Travis Travis Prentice's TD run in the first quarter of Miami of Ohio's 40-28 win over Ohio was the 72nd of his career, tying Ricky Williams' record set last season at Texas. It was the 34th game in which Prentice has scored a TD, surpassing Williams' record of 33.
I don't feel Tardif Steve Tardif rushed for 288 yards and six touchdowns as Maine Maritime defeated Framingham State 46-27. Tardif broke a Division III career record by rushing for more than 100 yards in 31 games.
Beane-ball Damian Beane set an NCAA Division II record with his 34th 100-yard rushing game in Shepherd's 55-3 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan. Beane rushed for 171 yards on 29 carries.
UPSET SPECIAL
Iowa almost keeps up The Hawkeye defense limited Ron Dayne to 39 yards on his first 12 carries, making it seem like the Wisconsin back was going to have to work for the record. Fifteen carries later, Dayne had 216 rushing yards and a place in the NCAA record books.
Big shock for Buckeyes Kurt Kittner threw for four touchdowns as Illinois defeated Ohio State 46-20. The Fighting Illini scored the most points against the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium since 1946.
STREAK-BUSTERS
Ricky loses his number Ricky Williams' streak of holding the major-college career rushing record fell after 352 days as Ron Dayne gained 216 yards on 27 carries. Dayne broke Williams' record with a 31-yard jaunt in the second quarter after entering the game needing 99 yards to surpass Williams' record of 6,279.
Scarlet Knights out of their rut Lee McDonald's 25-yard field goal in overtime ended Rutgers' 11-game losing streak, the nation's fourth-longest active streak, and gave the Scarlet Knights a 24-21 victory over 28-point favorite Syracuse.
No lull for Ull Scott Johnson's 46-yard touchdown pass to Edwin Ull with 26 seconds left lifted Division II West Virginia University-Tech past Concord 26-21, ending the nation's longest losing streak at 33 games.
