BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Tim Rattay moved into second place on the major-college passing yardage list Saturday, throwing for 466 yards and five touchdowns as Louisiana Tech beat UAB 41-20 for its eighth straight victory.

Rattay has 12,341 passing yards, moving past Louisville's Chris Redman (12,196) to trail only BYU's Ty Detmer (15,031). Rattay has played only three major-college seasons to four for Detmer and Redman. Rattay's 112 career TD passes rank third behind Detmer (121) and Florida's Danny Wuerffel (114).

Rattay and Redman each have one game remaining.

Rattay, well on his way to leading the nation in total offense for a record third straight season, was 25-of-35 with no interceptions in his 11th career 400-yard effort. Delwyn Daiger caught two of his second-half TD passes and shredded the nation's 10th-rated pass efficiency defense for nine receptions and 235 yards. He had a 67-yarder in the fourth quarter.

The Blazers (4-6) managed to use their option attack to keep up with the high-flying Bulldogs (8-2) for a half. They totaled 236 first-half yards, 38 short of their per-game average, and trailed 14-12.

Then the Rattay machine took over. He threw three third-quarter scoring strikes and another in the fourth, needing just 15 plays to execute the scoring drives. The Bulldogs went over 40 points for the sixth time this year despite holding the ball just 22 minutes, 58 seconds.

The offenses were a study in contrast. Louisiana Tech had 20 rushes for 17 yards while UAB ran 56 times for 270 yards.

Rattay led the Bulldogs 65 yards on their opening series of the second half, capping it with a 9-yard pass to Jordan. He set up the score with a 43-yarder to John Simon, extended by a roughing-the-passer penalty.

The Blazers' next two series ended with fumbles in Louisiana Tech territory. Rattay turned both miscues into touchdowns, a 37-yard strike to Daigre and a 35-yarder to Bobby Ray Tell.

UAB quarterback Daniel Dixon rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns and was 14-of-27 for 144 yards. His 26-yard run with 1:52 left in the first half made it 14-12. He added a 2-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Louisiana Tech answered with Rattay's 67-yard strike to Daigre to put it away.

It was the second victory for the Bulldogs at Legion Field, the first a 29-28 defeat of No. 11 Alabama two months ago.
