Virginia hoping for a lucky 7 again

 By Gregg Doyel
Special to ESPN.com

Season notes:
1999 record: 7-5 (5-3 ACC)
Coach: George Welsh
Returning starters: 12 (7 offense, 5 defense)

Outlook
The Cavaliers' 13-year streak of seven or more victories, an ACC record, is in jeopardy. Virginia might have lost just four starters on offense, but those were four vital starters: consensus All-America tailback Thomas Jones and the three people most responsible for clearing a path for him, All-America linemen Noel LaMontagne and John St. Clair, and fullback Anthony Southern. And the defense, according to Welsh, is even more troublesome, having to fill six starting holes on a unit that was seventh in the ACC, and 90th nationally, in total defense last season.

Quarterback Dan Ellis (2,050 yards, 20 touchdowns, 10 interceptions) was eighth in the country last season in passing efficiency, but the question remains: How will he do now that defenses will be focusing on him and not Jones?

Keep an eye on ...
Virginia has a pair of prototypical NFL receivers in senior Kevin Coffey and sophomore Billy McMullen, both 6-foot-4 athletes with jumping ability and speed. They combined for 56 catches for 920 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, and will have many more opportunities this year now that Jones, with his 30 carries per game, is gone to the NFL.

It's a good season if ...
The bar has been set -- Virginia must win seven games, as it has done every year since 1987, or Cavaliers fans will be unhappy. There have been years where seven victories continued the streak but weren't enough, like 1996, when Virginia had five All-Americans. This wouldn't be one of those seasons. Seven victories with this group would be a feat, and the Cavaliers would be wise to get those seven victories in the first 10 games. Game No. 11 is at Virginia Tech.
