Sunday, September 10 Hoosiers will be entertaining, if not winners By Jeff Potrykus Special to ESPN.com | |||||
Indiana Hoosiers 1999 record: 4-7 (3-5 Big Ten) Coach: Cam Cameron Returning starters: 15 (8 offense, 7 defense) Outlook Cameron, a former NFL quarterbacks coach, has done a commendable job with the Hoosiers' offense, which, even on a bad day, is entertaining. The defense needs a facelift. The Hoosiers finished last in the conference in scoring defense (36.4 points) a year ago, with opponents scoring at least 30 points nine times and at least 40 points five times. Only one Indiana defender was named to either the first or second units of the all-conference team. James Bell, the defensive coordinator at Wake Forest from 1997-'99, takes over at Indiana this year. Bell and Cameron moved several players from offense to defense during spring practice, but unless Bell can work a miracle with schemes, the Hoosiers have no hope of qualifying for a bowl game. Keep an eye on ... Antwaan Randle El. The junior quarterback is the No. 1 reason to watch the Hoosiers on Saturdays. He became the first player in Big Ten history to reach 5,000 career total yards as a sophomore, with 4,022 passing and 1,661 rushing. It's a good season if ... Winning one more game than last season might be the best this team can muster. Jeff Potrykus covers the Big Ten for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel |
