Perry goes nearly full-speed

MIAMI -- Maryland running back Bruce Perry showed no signs of discomfort from a strained abdominal muscle in the two-hour practice Saturday and appeared set to start in the FedEx Orange Bowl.

"I think he was full speed," Terrapins coach Ralph Friedgen said.

Perry, the Atlantic Coast Conference offensive player of the year, was injured Thursday. Friedgen held Perry out of practice Friday and said the tailback would not play Wednesday night against Florida unless he practiced in the days leading up to the game.

"I figured he'd be back," Friedgen said Saturday. "He's doing well."

Perry is an integral part of an offense that needs to be fully operational if Maryland is to upset the Gators. The 5-foot-9 sophomore ran this season for 1,274 yards, averaged nine yards on his 40 catches and scored a team-high 12 touchdowns.

Although Perry performed well Saturday, the Terrapins have other injury concerns. Third-string running back Jason Crawford, who has 151 yards and two touchdowns, turned an ankle Saturday.

"He was limping around, but hopefully he'll be all right," Friedgen said.

Starting guard Todd Wike missed practice with a sprained ankle, but hoped to be back in action Sunday. Strong safety Tony Jackson also has an ankle sprain, but expects to be play Wednesday.

"No way I'm not playing in this game," Jackson said.
