Injuries could sideline RB Perry, LG Wike

MIAMI -- The sixth-ranked Maryland Terrapins could be without running back Bruce Perry and left guard Todd Wike when they face No. 5 Florida on Wednesday in the Orange Bowl.

Perry aggravated a pulled abdominal muscle and Wike injured his right ankle in practice Thursday. Perry, who has 1,242 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, initially strained his abdominal muscle last week at practice in College Park, Md.

Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen is unsure if either player will be ready.

"It seemed much more severe than what it was," Friedgen said after Maryland's morning practice. "But we'll just have to see."

Maryland, which has not played since defeating North Carolina State 23-19 on Nov. 17, practiced for the second day in Miami.

Perry, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound sophomore, who also is second on the team in receptions, experienced no pain in Wednesday's workouts. But when the team practiced in full pads Thursday, he experienced a pull while running.

Wike, a 6-3, 291-pound junior, had his right ankle stepped on. X-rays were taken to determine the damage. While the test results were not available, he wore a brace to the team's luncheon after practice.

Maryland has one of the most balanced offenses in the country, averaging 221 yards per game rushing and 219 passing.

Despite the injuries, Friedgen is pleased with the progress Maryland has made the last two weeks.

"I think we have advanced," Friedgen said. "We have improved during this time. Hopefully, we will have all our players for the game."

Orange Bowl an unexpected gift for Maryland; not so for Florida
