Wike's 32-game starting streak in jeopardy

Associated Press

MIAMI -- Maryland left guard Todd Wike is doubtful for the Orange Bowl, and the No. 6 Terrapins are making plans to replace injured safety Tony Jackson for Wednesday night's game against No. 5 Florida.

Wike missed Sunday's practice with a sprained right ankle, leaving his string of 32 straight starts in jeopardy.

"We'll go one more day with him, but right now I don't think he's going to play," Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said.

Wike would be replaced by freshman Kyle Schmidt, who would be making his first college start.

"Kyle's done a great job for us," center Melvin Fowler said. "I don't think we'll miss a beat."

Jackson, who has a sprained left ankle, participated in some drills Sunday.

"He's not 100 percent at all. But he's better than he was yesterday," Friedgen said. "If it's possible, he'll go."

On the Florida side, defensive coordinator Jon Hoke said injured defensive end Kennard Ellis (knee) practiced Sunday, and should play about 20 plays. If he can't play, the Gators will be down to just three healthy defensive linemen.

Jackson insists he will play, but Friedgen is already talking about moving starting cornerback Dennard Wilson to safety and starting senior Tony Okanlawon at cornerback.

Okanlawon has been sidelined for nearly two months with an undisclosed ailment, but has practiced well this week and appears ready to return.

"I told him I had concerns for him," Friedgen said. "But I don't think we would be where we were without him, and if at all possible I'd like to see him finish his career here on a positive note."
