Tuesday, January 1 Cobbs says he won't be in upcoming NFL draft Associated Press DALLAS -- Arkansas running back Cedric Cobbs said Tuesday that he would remain in school after considering making himself available for the NFL draft.
The hero of Arkansas' 27-6 victory over Texas in the Cotton Bowl two years ago, Cobbs spent most of Tuesday's game on the sideline. Bothered by a bad back, Cobbs had practiced sparingly since the Razorbacks' arrival in Dallas a week ago and coach Houston Nutt had made it clear he did not expect a great deal from Cobbs.
Cobbs carried twice against Oklahoma and wound up with minus 1 yard in the 10-3 loss on New Year's Day.
"I didn't want to leave school and not be up to my full potential," Cobbs said after the game.
He also said it was difficult to watch from the sideline.
"We didn't get a big play done and I was definitely wishing I could come in there and try to help," he said. However, Cobbs said he couldn't blame the coaches for sticking with Brandon Holmes (8-for-27) and Fred Talley (7-for-23). TOUGH D: Against the Sooners' defense, Arkansas put up some meager numbers.
The Razorbacks completed only two passes and the 50 yards total was the eighth lowest in bowl history.
OU sacked Zak Clark and Matt Jones a total of nine times. The last time Arkansas allowed nine sacks in a game was against SMU in 1990. NO EASY POINTS: The Sooners made 231 yards, including 66 in their touchdown drive.
"They came in here and had 10 (wins) and were the defending national champions and we held them to 10 points," said Arkansas' Curt Davis. "We should be very proud of that. Their offense is good but their defense is their backbone, just like with us."
"Most of the times they were bringing more guys than we could block or we would shoot ourselves in the foot," said senior center Kenny Sandlin. "They were supposed to be here and we weren't and they only beat us by seven points."
Nutt said he felt 14 to 17 points would be enough to win. "We thought it was going to be a long day with a 1-yard gain, a 2-yard gain but just be patient," he said. "There was going to be a time when we hit a 20- 25-yard run and that would give us the momentum."
But, the OU defense was as advertised. "On film, they're the best we've seen in about 15-20 years since we've been coaching," he said.
