Here are three A-10 story lines to watch as the 2001-02 season unfolds:
| |
Super soph Jameer Nelson combines with Marvin O'Connor to give St. Joseph's one of the nation's top backcourts. |
How will the coaching carousel affect the league?
Talk about a merry-go-round, as seven coaching changes have left many new names on the sidelines. What impact will Steve Lappas have at Massachusetts? How will Xavier fare with Thad Matta, who was impressive at Butler last season? Jan Van Breda Kolff takes over at St. Bonaventure's, replacing new Rhode Island coach Jim Baron. Add Billy Hahn (LaSalle), Karl Hobbs (George Washington) and Danny Nee (Duquesne), and you need a scorecard to keep track of all of the moves.
How special will this year be for John Chaney?
The Temple coach will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. It will be a special moment. Will Temple be able to remain among the top teams in the A-10 with Lynn Greer and Kevin Lyde leading the returning players?
Will St. Joseph's backcourt build on last year's momentum?
Point guard Jameer Nelson and two-guard Marvin O'Connor really made some noise last season. If you don't believe it, go ask Mike Montgomery and Stanford about their NCAA second-round challenge versus the Hawks. Stanford emerged victoriously, but not by much, baby! Can the tandem of Nelson and O'Connor become one of the top three backcourts in America? How far can Phil Martelli's team go this season?
