Scouting Report
1999 Season Despite coming into the spring with 373 professional innings under his belt, most of them as a starter, Onan Masaoka won a job in the Los Angeles bullpen. Used as a long reliever and situational southpaw, he proved difficult to hit.

Pitching, Defense & Hitting Masaoka has a live 91-94 MPH fastball. He complements it with a flat curveball that nevertheless freezes lefthanders because of his three-quarter delivery. His mechanics are inconsistent, however, and he needs to work to create better balance on the mound. Though his release leaves him a bit vulnerable defensively, he makes up for it with his athleticism. His move to first is pretty good and he's unproven as a hitter.

2000 Outlook Masaoka would prefer to become a starter again. To succeed in that role, he'll need better command and a reliable offspeed pitch. The trade of Pedro Borbon to the Blue Jays makes it more likely that the Dodgers will keep Masaoka in the bullpen.
