HOUSTON (AP) -- Cynthia Cooper scored a season-high 25 points to lead the Houston Comets to a 78-66 victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday.

Cooper finished 8-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, and was flawless at the foul line in six attempts.

Sheryl Swoopes added 20 points and nine rebounds, and had a season-high seven assists for the Comets (9-1), while Tina Thompson had 19 points.

"When Cynthia is hitting 3-pointers and driving, it's very hard to stop all three of us," Thompson said. "You have to be pretty good defensively."

Minnesota's Katie Smith, the WNBA's leading scorer, didn't get her first field goal until 3:11 was left in the first half. By that time she already had three fouls. While Smith was held to just four points in the first half, she finished with 18.

The Lynx (6-3) never led, shooting 37 percent from the field, while the Comets shot 49 percent from the field, including 7-for-14 from 3-point range.

The Comets led 42-29 at halftime and went up 68-51 with 6:43 left on a jumper by Cooper.

Kristin Folkl added 14 points for Minnesota, while Maria Brumfield and Andrea Lloyd-Curry each had 11.

"We took some bad shots in the first half but that was because we are so young and their defense is so strong," Lloyd-Curry said. "Overall, I would say this is a good learning experience."

Minnesota beat the Mercury in Phoenix 69-62 on Saturday, but the Lynx weren't blaming the back-to-back games for their loss.

Folkl said every team in the WNBA has to play back-to-back games. She said the Comets just capitalized on Minnesota's turnovers and mistakes.

"We had the legs and the effort but we just played against a heck of a team," Lynx coach Brian Agler said. "They just beat us. We didn't have very many second shots because they were very strong on the defensive boards."
