Monarchs shoot 32 percent, win anyway

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

SEATTLE (AP) -- Seattle Storm coach Lin Dunn knows the game is hard enough without missing the easy shots.

"We hit our free throws and we win," Dunn said Thursday night after the expansion Storm (2-6) missed 16 of 31 free throws in a 54-50 loss to the Sacramento Monarchs, (4-3). "We're young, we're inexperienced and we're going to have to get better."

Kedra Holland-Corn and Yolanda Griffith each scored 13 points to help the Monarchs survive their lowest point total this season. It was Sacramento's third consecutive victory.

Seattle trailed by as many 12 points in the second half but narrowed the deficit to 47-46 with 2:16 to play. A jumper by Sacramento's Ruthie Bolton-Holifield and a three-pointer by Holland-Corn, however, put the Monarchs ahead 52-46 with 1:05 remaining.

Holland-Corn scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half, sinking all four free throws she attempted.

"It wasn't a great offensive night for either team," said Holland-Corn. "I kept my confidence by putting in those free throws, then I was able to hit that big shot at the end."

Sacramento hit just 19 of 59 shots from the field, or 32.2 percent. Seattle sank only 16 of its 46 shots, for 34.8 percent.

"That's pretty typical of this league," Sacramento coach Sonny Allen conceded. "There aren't a lot of good shooting teams around. The defense had a little to do with it, but a lot of easy, open shots got missed tonight. Then they missed 16 free throws, the easiest shot there is."

Seattle, which trailed 25-23 at halftime, made it close in the final minute. Simone Edwards hit two free throws with 50 seconds left, then added a turn-around jumper with just 4.4 seconds remaining, but Holland-Corn sank a pair of free throws with three seconds left to clinch the win.

Edna Campbell led Seattle with 17 points and Edwards added 11. Bolton-Holifield finished with 10 for Sacramento.
