MIAMI (AP) -- Sheri Sam scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the expansion Miami Sol to their first home win with a 74-61 victory over the Detroit Shock on Tuesday night. Miami (2-4) never trailed as Marlies Askamp had a team season-high 13 rebounds, Kisha Ford had 14 points, including 12 in the second half, and Shantia Owens added 12. Elena Tornikidou and Tamicha Jackson each scored 14 points for the Shock (2-4), who shot just 23-of-74 from the field. Sam, a starter last year in all 32 games for the Orlando Miracle, made her first start this season and provided immediate offense. She opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and had another jumper as the Sol opened with a 9-0 lead. Sam went down hard with 11:55 left in second half, but remained in the game. After leading 32-29 at halftime, Miami increased its lead to 55-45 with 8:00 to play. Miami led 62-46 when Milena Flores hit the second of two free throws with 4:47 left in the game. Miami was 26-of-38 from the free-throw line, while Detroit was just 13-of-21. After playing four of its first five at home, Detroit is in a stretch where it will play 10 of 12 on the road. Before the game, the Sol added forward Kristen Rasmussen to the roster and waived forward Tanja Kostic. Rasmussen, a 6-foot-2 rookie out of Michigan State who averaged 12.7 points and 8.2 rebounds a game in four years, was waived by the Utah Starzz on June 8. | ALSO SEE WNBA Scoreboard RECAPS Miami 74 Detroit 61
