PHOENIX (AP) -- Brandy Reed scored 22 points, including the winning basket with 23 seconds left, to lead the Phoenix Mercury to a 51-48 victory over the New York Liberty on Wednesday night.

Reed, acquired in an offseason trade with Minnesota, hit a jump shot from just below the free-throw line to give the Mercury a 49-48. Tonya Edwards hit two free throws with a second left to seal the victory.

Vickie Johnson, who led the Liberty with 14 points, missed a desperation 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Phoenix took charge early, scoring the first eight points. Ten minutes into the game, New York had scored just six points. The Mercury led 28-21 at halftime.

The Liberty, who opened the season Monday with a loss in Houston, opened the second half with a 10-1 run. Shea Mahoney led the charge with five points.

New York starting guard Crystal Robinson sprained her left ankle early in the first half and did not return.
