Tampa Bay stopped a three-game losing skid and handed United (23-8) its first defeat since July 10, a 2-1 loss to Colorado.

The winning goal came with less than eight minutes left when Mutiny's Carlos Valderrama passed to Shannon, whose shot beat United goalie Tom Presthus.

In the 88th minute Tampa Bay's Lagos drilled a shot from 20 yards to the left of a diving Presthus for a 4-2 lead.

United, which trailed 2-0 at halftime, got goals from Jeff Agoos and Roy Lassiter to tie the game with 15 minutes remaining.

Tampa Bay scored twice on just three shots on goal in the first half.

The Mutiny (14-17) took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of play on a goal by Steve Ralston.

Mutiny goalie Scott Garlick, a former United keeper, entered Wednesday with a league-high 138 saves.

The Mutiny went ahead 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Lagos' pass was headed in by a charging Ritchie Kotschau to beat Presthus.

United finally beat Garlick with a 32-yard line drive shot by defender Agoos in the 70th minute.

Six minutes later D.C. tied the game as Lassiter (18 goals) pushed in a shot.

United had already clinched first place in the Eastern Conference and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.

Tampa Bay had also clinched a postseason berth prior to Wednesday.
