BOSTON -- The reeling Boston Bruins will have to make their playoff push without second-leading scorer Anson Carter.
Carter, who has missed the last seven games with a deep shoulder bruise, will undergo season-ending surgery on his right wrist sometime within the next week. Without the services of Carter, the Bruins have gone 1-7-3 in their last 11 games. Saturday afternoon, they suffered their latest defeat, a 3-0 blanking at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers. In 59 games this season, Carter -- a 25-year-old left wing -- leads the team with 22 goals and is second with 46 points. Boston is 12th in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind the New York Rangers for the final playoff berth. The Bruins already are without center Jason Allison for the rest of the season due to a wrist injury. Carter was a 1992 10th-round draft pick of the Quebec Nordiques but played four seasons at Michigan State, where he was a three-time All-Conference performer. He was traded to Washington in April 1996 and split the following season between the Capitals and Portland of the American Hockey League. On March 1, 1997, he was dealt to Boston in a blockbuster deal involving Jason Allison and Adam Oates. | ALSO SEE Flyers top Bruins as everybody wonders about Raymond |
