Storr makes 33 saves in win

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Los Angeles goalie Jamie Storr got all the credit from his coach after the Kings' 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

Steven Reinprecht
The Kings' Steven Reinprecht hit the ice after being checked by New Jersey's Ken Daneyko in the second Saturday night.

"I think the story today was Jamie," coach Andy Murray said after the Kings won their second straight and improved to 5-5-1 on the road. "His play inspired our team. He was real good. Jamie made two or three outstanding saves."

Perhaps Storr's best stop came seven minutes into the second period with the Kings clinging to a 1-0 lead. Storr, who made 33 saves, sprawled across the goal to deflect away a shot by Steve Kelly that appeared to have him beaten.

That was the kind of day it was for the Devils, who lost their first home game this season despite outshooting the Kings 34-16.

"We didn't play that badly the whole game," Devils coach Larry Robinson said. "What happened is we gave them two goals -- we made a bad clearing pass on the first and we gave it to them on the second. So we gave them two gifts."

Devils defenseman Scott Stevens said New Jersey rarely tested Storr.

"We didn't create enough traffic going to the net," Stevens said. "So it was easy for him to see our shots."

The Kings took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Bryan Smolinski's third goal of the season. Smolinski took a cross-ice pass from Nelson Emerson after New Jersey failed to clear after a faceoff. He whiffed on his first attempt, pushing the puck a few feet in front of him in the left circle.

But when no Devils player came out to challenge, Smolinski shot the puck again and whistled it past Chris Terreri, who was sprawled on the ice in anticipation of the initial shot.

Jozef Stumpel made it 2-0 at 17:49 of the second. He beat Terreri over his right shoulder after Ziggy Palffy took the puck away from Devils defenseman Brian Rafalski and passed to an open Stumpel.

The Devils made it 2-1 on Randy McKay's power-play goal at 7:35 of the third after Lubomir Visnovsky was sent off for high-sticking John Madden.

McKay tipped in a slap shot by Rafalski from the just inside the blue line.

Game notes
