ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Ed Belfour overcame a shaky start in his first preseason appearance, stopping the last 17 shots he faced in the Dallas Stars' 2-2 tie with St. Louis on Monday night.

Belfour, sidelined by a sore heel for the first five exhibition games, allowed two goals on the first four shots he faced.

Scott Young scored his third goal of the preseason at 41 seconds, getting a loose puck in the slot when a pass tipped off a Stars player. Jochen Hecht made it 2-0 at 5:03 with the Blues (2-2-2) on a 5-on-3 advantage.

All of the scoring came in the first period. Blues goalie Roman Turek, who made 25 saves, forced overtime when he stopped Brenden Morrow on a breakaway with about two seconds left.

Both teams had chances in the extra period, with the Blues' Sean Hill whistled for tripping with 2:35 to go and the Stars' Mike Modano called for hooking with 1:35 left. St. Louis' Mike Eastwood hit the post just before Modano was sent off.

Richard Matvichuk and Brett Hull tied it in the first period for the Stars (3-1-2), who beat the Blues 4-2 on Sept. 16 in Dallas.

Matvichuk's goal came on a power play at 14:44 and an off-ice ruling helped the Stars tie it on Hull's second goal of the preseason. The goal was awarded during a stoppage with less than two minutes remaining in the first, and the clock was re-set to four minutes _ the official time of the goal _ at that point.

Hull shot glanced off Turek's glove and the crossbar, then the back of Turek's leg before barely crossing the line. The goal light briefly went on, but play went on.

Young also had an assist for St. Louis and has six points in four preseason games.
