Oates solves Pens' Aubin in OT

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Adam Oates said the Washington Capitals needed points. He made sure they got them.

Oates knocked in a rebound with 27.4 seconds left in overtime Wednesday night to give the Washington Capitals a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"We need points, we're not in the playoffs yet," Oates said. "I kind of stopped in front, hit a rebound, hit a rebound, and I got it in."

Pittsburgh goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin stopped Steve Konowalchuk's shot from the left wing, but Oates poked at the loose puck several times and finally flipped a backhander over the prone goalie.

The Capitals dominated play in the second and third periods plus overtime, constantly pressuring Aubin, who finished with 30 saves. Washington outshot Pittsburgh, 33-21, and even though Aubin made several big stops, the Capitals kept pushing.

"They got lucky at the end," Aubin said. "But what can you do. I am happy with my performance."

Washington coach Ron Wilson was happy with how the Capitals kept the pressure on, despite being stopped repeatedly.

"I don't know how many shots they had in overtime, but he made four tremendous saves," Wilson said. "Something good happened and we won that game."

The win ended a four-game winless streak for Washington and broke Pittsburgh's three-game winning streak. The Capitals came out of a recent offensive slumber and outshot the Penguins, 33-21.

Washington hadn't been successful in overtime this season, holding a 1-1-6 record before Wednesday.

"It's nice to finally get one in overtime," Washington's Brendan Witt said. "We still gave them a point, which happens, but we got the two points, which is great."

Peter Bondra got an assist for Washington, his first point since Nov. 27. It was Bondra's second game after missing eight following knee surgery.

Washington received offensive help from some unlikely places as Dmitri Mironov and Joe Sacco each scored their third goals of the season.

Jaromir Jagr gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead 3:38 into the game, flipping a shot past Olaf Kolzig from the doorstep after a Capitals giveaway behind the net. Jagr has eight goals in 10 games under new coach Herb Brooks.

Mironov tied it 3:33 into the second period, and Sacco gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead at the 14:03 mark. Sacco poked a loose puck past Andrew Ference on the right wing, skated in alone on Aubin and scored.

But Ian Moran tied the game with 3:34 left in the period. Kolzig stopped a Martin Sonnenberg shot, but Moran swatted it out of the air and into the net.
