BOX SCORE
KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- Patrick Lalime made his case for the backup job with 24 saves and Bruce Gardiner and Vaclav Prospal scored second-period goals to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 3-1 exhibition victory over the Calgary Flames. Lalime surrendered only a goal to Valeri Bure in the final minute of the first period, turning aside the last 15 shots he faced. He denied Chris Clark on a breakaway with 6 1/2 minutes left in the second. Gardiner's shorthanded tally 59 seconds into the middle period forged a 1-1 tie. Prospal put Ottawa ahead for good 13 1/2 minutes later, one-timing a high shot past Fred Brathwaite off a centering pass from offseason acquisition Rob Zamuner. Marian Hossa, a finalist for the Calder Trophy last season, capped the scoring with 2:44 to go in the third period. Brathwaite made 29 saves for the Flames, who fell to 1-3 in the preseason. With holdout All-Star Alexei Yashin practicing in Europe, the Senators improved to 4-0.
