Call it a record Ram-page

By R.B. Fallstrom
Associated Press

ST. LOUIS -- The way Marshall Faulk has been running, there's absolutely no suspense to his pursuit of the total-yardage record.

Marshall Faulk
Marshall Faulk needs just 36 yards to break Barry Sanders' record of 2,358 yards in a season.
That, and several other milestones are within easy reach of the St. Louis Rams in the season finale at Philadelphia. The team put together a three-page release detailing the amount of rewriting that will be required in the offseason.

  • Faulk needs 36 yards to eclipse Barry Sanders' 1997 NFL record of 2,358.

  • Kurt Warner needs one touchdown pass to become only the third player in league history to throw for 40 touchdowns. He tied the record with his ninth 300-yard passing game held by Dan Marino (1984) and Warren Moon (1990) in Sunday's 34-12 victory over Chicago.

  • Warner needs 99 yards passing to break the team record of 4,310 by Jim Everett in 1989 and will easily set a team mark for completion percentage. He's at 65.9 percent and the record is 59.7 percent by Dieter Brock in 1985.

  • Unless the Rams (13-2) lose by 30, they'll set a league record for point differential. They've outscored their opponents by 291 points, and the record is 261 by the 1991 Washington Redskins.

  • The Rams obliterated the 49-year-old franchise scoring record of 466 points Sunday and now have 495, sixth-highest in league history. They need 19 points to climb to third-highest behind Minnesota (556 in 1998) and Washington (541 in 1983).

  • The defense has 54 sacks, two shy of the franchise record reached in 1980, '85 and '88.

  • The Rams also have tied the team record for return touchdowns with 11, set in 1952.

  • Lost in the shuffle Sunday was kicker Jeff Wilkins setting an NFL record with 60 extra points in a season, a testament to the league's top-rated offense. The previous mark was 59 by Minnesota's Gary Anderson last season.

The total-yardage record is perhaps the most significant impending accomplishment, and it appeared to be a bit of a long shot before Faulk piled up a personal-best 258 yards. His teammates can't wait.

"His success is going to reflect some of what the offensive line is doing," guard Tom Nutten said. "That's really the only glory we're getting anyway, so we'll pat ourselves on the back."

Faulk could have easily done it in Sunday's 34-12 victory, but he went to the bench after one series in the third quarter. Coach Dick Vermeil decided to take him out after Grant Wistrom's 40-yard interception return made it 31-0 with 8:08 left in the third quarter.

"I figured it might be rubbing their nose in it," Vermeil said. "So I decided not to do that, and I think it was the right thing to do."

    Faulk didn't argue.

"This game is not all about records. It's just not all about that," Vermeil said. "When you're beating a team 31-0 and you go in just to get a record, that's tough."

The most amazing achievement, taken from the long view, is Warner's pursuit of 40 touchdown passes. Before this season, he'd thrown 11 passes total and the Rams exposed him to the Browns in the expansion draft.

"If I happen to get it, that'll be great," Warner said. "That's not what I play for or what I'm going to prepare for this week, just hoping to get one more.

"I'll just do what I have to do for this team to win another one."
