ST. LOUIS -- The way Marshall Faulk has been running, there's absolutely no suspense to his pursuit of the total-yardage record.
The total-yardage record is perhaps the most significant impending accomplishment, and it appeared to be a bit of a long shot before Faulk piled up a personal-best 258 yards. His teammates can't wait. "His success is going to reflect some of what the offensive line is doing," guard Tom Nutten said. "That's really the only glory we're getting anyway, so we'll pat ourselves on the back." Faulk could have easily done it in Sunday's 34-12 victory, but he went to the bench after one series in the third quarter. Coach Dick Vermeil decided to take him out after Grant Wistrom's 40-yard interception return made it 31-0 with 8:08 left in the third quarter. "I figured it might be rubbing their nose in it," Vermeil said. "So I decided not to do that, and I think it was the right thing to do." Faulk didn't argue. "This game is not all about records. It's just not all about that," Vermeil said. "When you're beating a team 31-0 and you go in just to get a record, that's tough." The most amazing achievement, taken from the long view, is Warner's pursuit of 40 touchdown passes. Before this season, he'd thrown 11 passes total and the Rams exposed him to the Browns in the expansion draft. "If I happen to get it, that'll be great," Warner said. "That's not what I play for or what I'm going to prepare for this week, just hoping to get one more. "I'll just do what I have to do for this team to win another one." |
