By Stephen Tsai Special to ESPN.com San Jose State Spartans 1999 record: 3-7 (1-5 WAC) Coach: Dave Baldwin Starters returning: 13 (8 offense, 5 defense) Outlook During spring practice, Baldwin relinquished more control to his coordinators. But he has not lost a grip on the fact that, for the Spartans to be successful, there needs to be stability at quarterback. The Spartans have not had a quarterback start every game since Jeff Garcia in 1993. Marcus Arroyo, who redshirted last season, is listed as the starting quarterback. But he started only five games as a true freshman in 1998, and did not play a full game that year. Arroyo is mobile and has a decent arm. Last season, running back Deonce Whitaker averaged 9.2 yards every time he touched the football, the NCAA's second-highest, per-touch average. Trouble was, Whitaker was slowed by a neck injury. But Whitaker is tough -- nearly as tough as his girlfriend, a professional boxer. Left guard Jeremy Dominguez, the Spartans' best blocker, lost 49 pounds during the offseason and reported to training camp at 311 pounds. Keep an eye on ... Whitaker entered San Jose State as a non-qualifier, but is scheduled to earn a bachelor's degree in December. If he graduates, he will be awarded an extra year of football eligibility. It's a good season if... The Spartans, who rely heavily on junior-college recruiting, can avoid injuries. The Spartans have talent -- they beat Stanford last year -- but not depth. |
