| Monday, September 4 Cardinals begin life after Redman | |||||
By Eric Crawford Special to ESPN.com Louisville Cardinals 1999 record: 7-5 (4-2 C-USA) Coach: John L. Smith Returning starters: 12 (5 offense, 7 defense) Outlook The Cardinals lost the NCAA I-A record holder for pass completions in QB Chris Redman, but coach John L. Smith is more worried about replacing RB Frank Moreau. Sophomore QB Dave Ragone will get the job of replacing Redman. He hasn't started a college game, but is a big, strong-armed lefthander who is much more mobile than Redman. He'll have a first-rate target in WR Arnold Jackson, who is just 66 catches away from breaking the NCAA I-A career record. The RB spot isn't as easy to call. Tony Stallings has the edge right now, but he is a converted LB with one college carry. The Cardinals lost a productive, if undersized TE in Ibn Green, but may actually improve at the position as newcomers Richard Owens and Ronnie Ghent give them a more traditional look. The interior of the offensive line is solid with returnees Aaron Dardzinski, Jason Padget and Joe O'Shaughnessy, but newcomers will have to get up to speed quickly at both T spots. The defense should be deeper and more experienced than in Smith's first two seasons. Matt Sexton, Donovan Arp (nearly recovered from an Achilles' injury), Derrick Kennedy and Michael Josiah are all returning starters on the line. Michael Brown is a rising star at LB alongside four-year starter Rashad Harris. CBs Antonio Roundtree and Rashad Holman lead a secondary that will be asked to provide more man coverage this season. Aside from a Sept. 23 trip to Florida State, Louisville's non-conference schedule is manageable. A three-game home stretch against Cincinnati, East Carolina and Tulane could determine the Cardinals' postseason hopes. Keep an eye on ... WR Arnold Jackson. A Prop 48 as a freshman, he successfully petitioned the NCAA for a fifth season of eligibility over the summer. That didn't keep agents from propositioning him, but he's back to set a career reception record before moving to the next level. It's a good season if ... The Cardinals reach a bowl game. Considering what they have lost, keeping the program where it has been the past two seasons might actually be a step forward. |
