By Scott Brown Special to ESPN.com Louisiana-Monroe Indians 1999 record: 5-6 Coach: Bobby Keasler Returning starters: 14 (7 offense, 7 defense) Outlook Quarterback Andy Chance led the Indians to three wins in their final four games last season, and the Indians' hopes of posting their first winning season since moving up to I-A in 1994 rest largely on the talented redshirt sophomore. Chance blossomed after Keasler embraced a spread attack and in a 29-28 upset of Tulsa, he rushed for 124 yards and passed for 254 more. He figures to get help from Arkansas transfer Mark Henderson at running back, while Sean Brown is the leading returner at wideout after catching 37 passes last season. The offensive line allowed 38 sacks last season, but the Indians are hoping a trimmer Padraic McGinnis (6-5, 330) will make the unit better this season. Defensively, Louisiana-Monroe employs a 4-2-5 set, which makes it susceptible to the run. In the unorthodox set, it is imperative that the two roving safeties make plays, and Cedric Robinson certainly made his share last season. The senior led the Indians in tackles (94) and had nine tackles for losses as well four sacks. He may be one of college football's better-kept secrets. Linebackers Otis Robinson and Carey Johnson are fast and rangy though neither is particularly big. Ron Phenix and Bart Butcher are the leading returners up front. Keep an eye on ... RB Mark Henderson. The senior, who has been slowed by academic difficulties since arriving at Louisiana-Monroe, will be the featured back after rushing for 232 yards in a backup role last season. His emergence would take some pressure off Chance. It's a good season if ... The Indians win five games. With three I-AA teams on the schedule as well as games against Louisiana-Lafayette and Middle Tennessee State, the Indians should win at least four games and six victories is not out of the question.
