AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Quenton Griffin scored two touchdowns and, for the first time this season, Oklahoma ran better than it passed in beating Iowa State 31-10 Saturday.

In unseasonably warm 77-degree weather that allowed fans to wear shorts and T-shirts, Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel had one of his poorest days of the season. It didn't matter.

The Sooners (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) rushed for a season-high 301 yards against a defense that ranked 91st nationally against the run and shut down Iowa State (4-6, 1-6) and its standout running back, Darren Davis, to win its first conference road game.

Oklahoma's best game previously on the ground had been 166 yards against Indiana State in the opener.

Iowa State managed only 129 yards through three quarters and Davis, averaging 140 yards a game, found almost no running room behind a line missing two starters. He carried 17 times for just 53 yards in his final home game but caught a 40-yard pass from Sage Rosenfels in the fourth quarter for the Cyclones' only touchdown.

Davis' rushing total was his lowest since getting 48 against Nebraska in the ninth game last season.

Heupel, averaging 329 yards a game passing, had trouble finding receivers and several times threw under pressure even though Iowa State rushed just three players most of the game.

He was 24-of-42 for 180 yards but did continue his streak of a touchdown pass in every game. His 10-yard shovel pass to Griffin gave Oklahoma a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and he threw a swing pass that Josh Norman turned into a 26-yard scoring play with 1:28 left.

It was just the second time Heupel has thrown for less than 260 yards.

Griffin, a freshman who was held out of the first seven games, also scored on a 27-yard run and finished with 123 yards in 11 carries. Reggie Skinner added 116 yards in 11 attempts.

Iowa State netted only 26 yards in its first seven possessions and couldn't capitalize on two good opportunities.

The Cyclones were trailing 10-0 when Reggie Hayward jarred the ball from Heupel and James Reed recovered for Iowa State at the Oklahoma 44. But the Cyclones went nowhere in three plays and had to punt.

Later, Oklahoma's Jarrail Jackson muffed a punt and Iowa State's Ryan Sloth recovered at the Sooners' 34. Davis ran 7 yards on the first play, but the Sooners stopped him for no gain on the next snap and Iowa State gave the ball up after two incompletions.

Oklahoma then drove 72 yards in seven plays to go up 17-0. Heupel hit Curtis Fagan for 23 yards on third-and-10 from the 28 and four plays later, Griffin sprinted 27 yards for a touchdown, breaking two tackles and getting a good block downfield from Jackson.

Mike McKnight's 42-yard field goal just before halftime drew Iowa State to 17-3. Oklahoma went up 24-3 on Seth Littrell's 3-yard run in the third quarter after Griffin's 44-yard touchdown run was nullified by a penalty for an illegal block.
