AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Akron quarterback James Washington turned a rollout into a touchdown with 38 seconds to play and the Zips overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half to beat Kent 37-34 Saturday.

Jose Davis was 16-of-22 for 275 yards and two touchdowns for Kent (2-9, 2-6 Mid-American Conference) and also ran for 66 yards. His 27-yard pass to Chantee Murphy with 3:41 left gave Kent a 34-30 lead.

Washington's 4-yard run completed the game-winning, eight-play drive for the Zips (7-4, 5-3), who have won three straight games in the rivalry.

Kent went ahead 21-6 in the third quarter on Davis' 3-yard run.

Akron rallied behind Brandon Payne's two short touchdown runs. Payne set Akron freshman rushing records of 161 yards in a game and 845 in a season. The records were held by Ben Kimbrough and had stood since 1955.
