The lowdown
2000-01 record: 14-14; 4-10 in MWC (7th)
Final Ranking: NR
Postseason: None.
Three Questions for 2001-02
1. How will the Aztecs handle the expectations that they're actually supposed to be good this season? Will they fold, will they respond, will they create a buzz in San Diego?
2. How much of an impact will Tony Bland have for the Aztecs? Can he step in and contribute immediately in the Mountain West after sitting out a season?
3. Will Mike Mackell live up to his hype of being a big-time JC recruit? Will he coexist with Randy Holcomb and Myron Epps who have guided the Aztecs to the point of breaking through onto the national scene?
Andy Katz's Scenarios
Best case: Bland is an impact player, the Aztecs get the necessary production out of Mackell and take the MWC crown -- and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Worst case: The Aztecs can't get over the hump with a difficult road non-conference schedule, finish a few games out of contention for a bid and end up in the NIT (still a remarkable accomplishment for Steve Fisher and Co.).
