UNC's Cota out with viral infection

ESPN.com news services

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's Ed Cota, point guard for the struggling Tar Heels, did not practice Friday because of a viral infection and will miss Saturday's game against Florida State.

Cota's virus is not the flu, doctors said.

Cota leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in assists with 8.6 per game. He had 10 assists in Carolina's loss at Virginia on Tuesday and moved into ninth place in NCAA history with 901 assists. He has not missed a game since a Jan. 31, 1999, win over Georgia Tech, which he missed because of a calf muscle injury.

The Tar Heels have lost three in a row and will try to avoid their first four-game losing streak since the 1991-92 season when they play the Seminoles.
