PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- All season, Philadelphia 76ers coach Larry Brown has been on Larry Hughes about his defense. It was his offense that made the difference in a win over the New York Knicks. Hughes scored 26 points and Eric Snow hit three free throws in the final minute as the 76ers beat the cold-shooting Knicks 74-70 Tuesday night.
"He made some big shots tonight," Brown said. "They were possibly the biggest of the game." Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy agreed. "He really hurt us tonight, he's the guy that got them going," Van Gundy said. "He gave them the offense they needed." Despite shooting only 30 percent from the field, the Knicks had a chance to win after Chris Childs made two free throws with 12 seconds left, cutting Philadelphia's lead to 71-70. But Snow countered with two free throws for the 76ers and, after New York's Latrell Sprewell missed a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left, Snow made one of two from the line to seal the 76ers' third straight win. Hughes scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, including 10 of Philadelphia's first 12 points in the period. The 76ers led by only two entering the final quarter, but extended their lead to 61-50 on Hughes' three-point play with 8:16 left. New York closed to 66-63 after going on a 13-5 run that was capped by John Wallace's three-point play. The 76ers were still leading by three, at 71-68, when Wallace blocked Snow's jumper as the shot clock ran down. But Allan Houston missed a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining and Kurt Thomas missed the follow for the Knicks. Philadelphia's George Lynch then missed two free throws to give New York its final chance. Rookie Todd McCullough grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds for the 76ers, who are 3-1 this season without leading scorer Allen Iverson, who is out with a broken hand. "He's been phenomenal," Brown said of McCullough. "I had no idea this kid would be at this level this soon." Houston scored 20 points, including 10-of-10 from the foul line, and Sprewell added 18 for the Knicks. However, both shot poorly, combining for 11-for-33 from the field. "It's hard for us to win if those two guys aren't shooting well," Van Gundy said. The game was tied 31-31 at halftime, a season-low for both teams, and Philadelphia led 49-47 after three periods. "We just never got into sync offensively," Childs said. Game notesThe 62 combined points in the first half was a low at First Union Center. ... The 76ers wore their new alternate road jerseys, which are blue. ...
