Warriors drop sixth straight at home

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Already missing Arvydas Sabonis, the Portland Trail Blazers got another scare when Steve Smith had to be helped off the court in an otherwise routine victory Friday night over the Golden State Warriors.

But Smith, who twisted his ankle and left the game for eight minutes in the first half, returned to go 4-for-4 on 3-pointers and score 21 points as the Blazers won 96-83, sending the Warriors to their sixth consecutive home defeat.

"It's a little sore, but it's alright," Smith said. "I tried to jump over a pick, and I landed on my ankle. I tweaked the same ankle I hurt about a month ago."

Damon Stoudamire had 26 points, eight assists and eight rebounds for Portland, which shot 50 percent and went 8-for-11 on 3-pointers. The Blazers never trailed.

"I thought the story of the game was Portland's ability to make perimeter shots," Warriors coach Garry St. Jean said. "What sticks out to me is that Steve Smith takes only nine shots and has 21 points. That's big-time production."

Sabonis, who sprained his right foot Wednesday night against Detroit, did not make the trip and it is unclear how long he will be sidelined.

Tony Farmer had 18 points and a career-high six steals for the Warriors, who have lost four straight overall.

Vonteego Cummings added 17 points for Golden State, and Larry Hughes had 14 despite leaving the game for the last 3{ minutes of the first half after getting kneed in the jaw while having a shot blocked by Portland's Jermaine O'Neal.

O'Neal, making his first start of the season, had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy was upset that his team committed 17 turnovers and allowed the Warriors to pull within seven points in the fourth quarter.

"I thought at times we played well, but I wasn't happy with our performance. At times we were careless with the ball, and we allowed ourselves to be put at risk in the fourth quarter," Dunleavy said. "It looks like a nice win in the box score, but we've got to be better."

Leading 54-44 at halftime, Portland increased its margin to as many as 18 points in the third quarter and led 77-62 entering the fourth.

Farmer and O'Neal had to be separated by officials after Farmer committed a flagrant foul on O'Neal and they tangled under the Portland basket in the third quarter.

The Warriors pulled to 83-72 with 8:15 remaining on a foul-line jumper by Hughes, and Cummings scored the next four points to pull Golden State within seven with 5:30 remaining.

But Smith responded with a 3-pointer to begin a 6-0 run for the Blazers. The Warriors did not threaten again.

Stoudamire had 12 points and Smith, who injured his ankle when he stepped on Jason Caffey's foot while playing defense, added nine as the Trail Blazers took a 10-point halftime lead. Farmer had 14 points in the first half for Golden State.
