System overview The Padres didn't have the financial resources to keep their 1998 pennant-winning club together. Even if they had the money, the success of that team rested on older, expensive players like Ken Caminiti and Steve Finley, while no one but the richest clubs could afford to keep Kevin Brown. Taking a long-term view, the Padres decided to rebuild using the farm system, shooting for success in their new stadium in three years. Some things went right in 1999. Starter Matt Clement showed he had what it took to succeed in the major leagues, and should develop into a staff ace if he stays healthy. Catcher Ben Davis stepped in when incumbent Carlos Hernandez got hurt, playing terrific defense while holding his own with the bat. On the other hand, heralded outfielder Ruben Rivera hit .195 with 143 strikeouts. Outfield prospects Mike Darr and Gary Matthews Jr. failed to hit at Triple-A Las Vegas, throwing their status in doubt. The Padres are a bit short of talent at the upper levels, but the lower reaches of the farm system look good. Third baseman Sean Burroughs is one of the best prospects in baseball, while the 1999 draft looks very successful. Overall, the Padres have a decent farm system; not as stocked as the best clubs, but not dry, either. 1999 Minor League W-L Percentage: .505, (ranked 12th) 1999 amateur draftFree agent defections gave the Padres six picks before the start of the second round, and they took full advantage of the windfall. Vince Faison, an outfielder from high school in Georgia, was the first player they selected. He is extremely fast, has power potential, and hit surprisingly well in rookie ball, though he is still rather raw. The second pick was Gerik Baxter, a polished high school pitcher from Washington state. He is expected to move quickly. The third first-rounder was Omar Ortiz, a hard-thrower from the University of Texas-Pan American. He has less experience than most college pitchers, but owns an outstanding arm. Supplemental picks were expended on Casey Burns, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Richmond, and Mike Bynum, a southpaw from the University of North Carolina. The latter owns a slider compared to Steve Carlton's. A third supplemental pick was used on Nick Trzesniak, a high school catcher from Illinois, who is a long way from the majors. The Padres did a good job with these picks, taking a wide variety of talent. Other players who could move fast are fourth-rounder Jason Moore, a shortstop from the University of Texas, and Clemson southpaw Chris Heck, taken in the fifth round. Top prospects1) Sean Burroughs, 3B: Hit .359 in the Midwest League, with excellent strike zone judgment. Power will come soon, and he could reach the majors by the end of 2001. 2) Wascar Serrano, RHP: Hard-thrower with good control, breezed through the California League. Needs a year of Triple-A, but a solid long-term property. 3) Adam Eaton, RHP: Key prospect in the Andy Ashby trade, acquired from Philadelphia. Good stuff, can dominate when he throws strikes. 4) Wiki Gonzalez, C: Has improved both his hitting and his fielding over the last year. Solid backup for Davis, could start for some teams. 5) Rick Guttormson, RHP: Solid slider, good control led to 14-8, 3.72 record in California League. Others of note Kevin Nicholson, SS: Bounced back from poor 1998 season to perform well in Double-A in 1999. Good hitter for a middle infielder, but may end up at second base. Mike Darr, OF: Injury-plagued, disappointing season in Triple-A hurts his status. Line drive hitter with patience when healthy. Buddy Carlyle, RHP: Doesn't have great stuff, but a 4.89 ERA at Vegas isn't bad, and he posted a solid K/BB ratio. Brandon Pernell, OF: Multi-talented outfielder, missed most of 1998 with injuries, but played well in 1999. Must prove he can hit in Double-A, but I think he will. Gary Matthews, Jr, OF: An even bigger disappointment than Darr. Showed speed, patience, and gap power in 1998, but fell apart in 1999 for no apparent reason. Other names to know: Ryan Balfe, 3B; Doug Dent, RHP; Kevin Eberwein, 3B; Isabel Giron, RHP; Junior Herndon, RHP; Brian Lawrence, RHP; Josh Loggins, OF; Rodrigo Lopez, OF; Geraldo Padua, RHP; Jacob Peavy, RHP; Pete Tucci, OF.
